Production has been temporarily suspended on both of our big game hunting newsletters — California Hog Hunter and California Bucks — pending the sale of both publications.

The last issues published were the Vol. 8, No. 3 issue of California Hog Hunter and the Vol. 2 No. 4 issue of California Bucks.

We are working diligently to make sure that subscribers will continue to receive these publications in the near future, once the sale is completed, and that they will receive all of the issues still due on their subscriptions. This process has taken much longer than anticipated, and we felt it was essential to let readers know why there has been such a long gap between issues.

We’d like to thank you for your support of our specialty newsletters, and we will keep you apprised of this process here on our web site. In the interim, we also plan to run news on hog and deer hunting, management, and issues on these pages. Our non-lead section here has the most up-to-date news on lead ammunition rules, regulations, and research.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jim Matthews. All of his contact information listed in the newsletters is the same, except for the e-mail address. His Earthlink.net and Charter.net addresses are no longer applicable. His current e-mail is odwriter@verizon.net.

California Bucks is a newsletter dedicated exclusively to hunting deer in California.

Welcome to California Bucks. Our newsletter (and this web site) is quickly becoming the No. 1 source for deer hunting information in California. That’s all we do. That’s all we cover. This site is dedicated exclusively to deer hunters in the Golden State. While this site is still growing and not all of these features are complete yet, this is what you will find here::

Trophy Bucks: If you don’t see the buck below as the equivalent of a 24 to 26-inch Colorado mule deer, you’re not a California deer hunter. Our deer are different, with six subspecies in the state, most of them smaller-bodied and smaller-horned. But that doesn’t mean they are somehow lesser trophies. Far from it. As lifetime California hunters, our staff knows and loves California deer and deer hunting. We try to bring you stories about the biggest bucks of each of the different subspecies, and we’ll run all of your photos on this web site. You send ’em, we’ll post ’em.

Hunting Tips, Tactics and Techniques: We try to bring you the information you need to be a better deer hunter — a better California deer hunter. Whether you hunt north coast blacktails, Colorado River burro deer, or Inyo mule deer in the southern Sierra Nevada, you have found the right publication and web site. Our deer are some of the most pressured in the country, and we bring you information on how successful hunters score each and every year.

Where to Hunt: While we don’t have GPS transmitters attached to the best bucks in California, we try to tell you where you can find good deer hunting in California. Every story includes tidbits of information that is aimed at getting you into the best deer areas. While you’re still going to have to put in the field time to be successful, our goal is to give you information that will save you some needless legwork.

Deer Management and News: As a newsletter, we believe it is our mission to bring you the most up-to-date news on deer management in California. We have covered everything from the proposed changes in the spike law, to doe hunting, to late-season buck hunting. We cover habitat improvement projects that include everything from fire to bulldozers and how they affect your deer hunting. We were the first to report on the lead ammunition-condor controversy in the sporting press (and for the most complete and detailed information on that subject, click here). And we also know how difficult it can be to find a wild game butcher these days, so we keep an updated list on this web sitehere.
