ONS Background

The Outdoor News Service is a news-based business that provides a weekly outdoor package to metro newspapers and web sites in Southern California, publishes three hunting newsletters, and consults with outdoor businesses to help them expand their visibility in the marketplace.

There are currently 11 newspapers that subscribe to our news service. They include The Register, Orange County; the Press-Enterprise, Riverside; theDaily Breeze, Torrance; The Sun, San Bernardino; the Daily Bulletin, Ontario; the North County Times, Escondido; The Californian, Bakersfield; the Antelope Valley Press, Lancaster; the Daily Press, Victorville; the Desert Dispatch, Barstow; the Daily Facts, Redlands. The bi-weekly anglers’ newspaper, Fish Rap, also uses our fishing reports. The package is also available on our web site and Jesse’s Hunting & Outdoors. The combined readership of the package each week is conservatively estimated at well over 1/2 million, using data provided by the newspapers and web sites.

The service also publishes three hunting newsletters: Western Birds, The Wingshooter’s Newsletter, California Hog Hunter, and California Bucks, all which are specific to California and all three have developed a cult-like following.

Our traditional public relations work is utilized by The Lakes, operators of Santa Ana River Lakes, Anaheim Lake, and the Corona Lake fishing programs. Our confidential media enrichment program is the other half of our public relations business. It has been used by a number of local and national businesses and organizations. For this program, each client is evaluated for exposure potential, a research and writing program is developed and executed, and the finished material provided to media outlets. All work in this area is kept confidential. 

Jim Matthews is the owner and founder of the Outdoor News Service, which was launched in 1980. He has been a writer in this field since 1970, selling over 1,000 free-lance magazine and news articles to virtually all of the major hunting and fishing publications, and he has been a regular contributor to the nation’s major wire services over the past three decades.
